A local Macmillan nurse, based at the Royal United Hospital in Bath, has won her second prestigious national award in less than six months.
Miranda Benney, Macmillan Uro-Oncology CNS from the RUH attended the prestigious British Journal of Nursing awards in London on Friday 20th March, and went home with the title of BJN Oncology Nurse of the Year.
The nights’ compere Roy Lilley and Macmillan representative Nicky Cannon presented the award to Miranda who was delighted to have won.
Many people’s lives are touched by cancer, and whether they practice in hospitals or the community, nurses will find themselves caring at some stage for adults with cancer.
This Award recognises an individual or team who have made a demonstrable improvement to the delivery of cancer patient care.
Miranda has been a Macmillan nurse for over 14 years, and has been pivotal in the development of remote follow up for those with stable prostate cancer – the PSA Tracker, which has been shared with many organisations.
She is part of the hospitals survivorship group, and has promoted the ‘recovery package’ which includes holistic needs assessment, treatment summaries and care plans.
Miranda said of the honour: “I am delighted to have won the BJN Oncology Nurse of the Year Award for 2015.
“I was so surprised and it’s lovely to be recognised for my work in improving the experience for those affected by urological cancers”
Helen Blanchard, Director of Nursing and Midwifery at the Royal United Hospitals Bath NHS Foundation Trust, said: “Miranda is dedicated to her patients and we are delighted that her commitment has been recognised in this way.
“On behalf of the RUH, we send our own congratulations to Miranda on being presented with this prestigious award.”
In November 2014, Miranda also received a Macmillan professionals award for service improvement excellence.
Maggie Crowe, Macmillan Development Manager for Bath said: “I am thrilled for Miranda. Receiving two national awards in the space of four months is a testament to the impact of her work.
“She has gone above and beyond to reach and improve the lives of people affected by urological cancers and it is only right that this is celebrated.”
The British Journal of Nursing is dedicated to advancing the profession through promoting evidence-based best practice.
Innovation, leadership and clinical excellence are all highlighted and celebrated at this prestigious nursing event.
National professional awards such as these, not only shine a light where it is most deserved, they also raise the profile and understanding of how nursing is at the centre of all patient care.
