Bath’s MP, Don Foster has welcomed the news that the number of unemployed claimants in Bath has continued to fall over the last year.
The number of unemployed claimants in the Bath constituency in August 2014 was 673.
This represents a rate of 1.5% of the economically active population aged 16 to 64.
The number of claimants is 488 lower than in August 2013 and 23 lower that in July 2014.
Commenting Don Foster said: “The strong labour market performance hasn’t happened by accident.
“The Liberal Democrats have taken steps to ensure our labour market is fair and flexible, delivering opportunities for everyone and preventing exploitation of the most vulnerable.”
There was more good news for Bath as the number of unemployed claimants aged 18 to 24 also fell by 0.7% to 130.
This is lower than both regional and national averages which are 1.8% and 3.1% respectively.
Commenting further, Steve Bradley, Lib Dem Parliamentary Campaigner for Bath: “These figures are great news for Bath and highlight the great work being done by the Lib Dems in power, both in Government and locally.”
On a national level, The Office for National Statistics (ONS) said that over the last year the number of people unemployed had fallen by 468,000. This is the largest annual fall in unemployment since 1988.
Don added: “The employment growth that we are now witnessing is one of this Government’s key achievements.”
